COMPOSITION OF FEED FOR LAYING HENS

What are the main characteristics of a good feed for laying hens ?

High protein level

Laying hens need a protein-rich diet to maintain regular egg production. A protein level of 16% to 18% is ideal to support both laying and the general health of the hen.

Calcium

Calcium is crucial for the formation of strong eggshells. Laying hen feed should contain around 3% to 4% calcium. Insufficient calcium can lead to weak or no eggshells.

Phosphorus

As well as calcium, phosphorus is important for bone health and eggshell quality. A well-balanced calcium/phosphorus ratio is required, generally around 4:1.

Vitamins and Minerals

A good laying hen feed is enriched with essential vitamins (such as vitamin D, E and A) and minerals to support overall health and laying. Vitamin D3, for example, is essential for calcium absorption.

Energy

An adequate level of energy (calories) is needed to support the high metabolism required for egg-laying. Common sources of energy include grains such as maize and wheat.

Fibres

Although hens need relatively little fibre, a certain amount is good for the digestive system. Fibre helps regulate transit and contributes to a feeling of satiety.

DESCRIPTION FEEDING for chicks

Different needs for different ages : the importance of a suitable diet

As soon as they hatch, chicks have specific protein requirements for their rapid growth. Choose a suitable protein-rich feed (18-20%). As they grow, pullets need a different mix, with less protein but more calcium for strong eggshells. Keep a close eye on their feed to ensure their health and vitality at every stage.
